Artist Statement
For me, the artistry in creating neon signs is deeply rooted in the challenge they present. I have a passion for tasks that demand skill and precision, and bending glass to form neon signs is a perfect example of such a task. This process, intricate and demanding, provides a deep sense of satisfaction. My proficiency in this trade, which has remained largely unchanged since its first public display in 1910, is a source of immense pride. With 26 years of experience as a neon artist, I have come to view myself not just as a practitioner, but as a guardian of this rare art form.
In Wyoming, I stand as the sole active tube bender in the neon trade, a role that underscores my commitment to preserving a skill that is fading into obscurity. My journey as a neon tube bender has been nothing short of fascinating. It has taken me down a path filled with enriching encounters and memorable experiences. The people I've met along the way have profoundly impacted my life in ways I never could have anticipated.
My work has spanned the globe, with pieces finding homes in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and beyond. There is an indescribable joy in visiting cities around the world and seeing my creations illuminate the night. They shine as beacons, inviting onlookers to come closer and immerse themselves in their glow. This international presence not only highlights the reach of my work but also symbolizes the universal appeal and enduring charm of neon art.
